“A Sorta Fairytale” was released as the first single on Tori Amos‘ 2002 album “Scarlet’s Walk”. The song remains one of the most commercially successful ones in Amos’ career and was followed by a very non-standard and memorable music video. Today, THAT SPOT presents you with the full list of locations seen in the video. Following the description on Wikipedia,
“the music video, directed by Sanji, features Amos, as a head attached to a disembodied leg, falling in love with another head attached to a disembodied arm (played by Adrien Brody). The two creatures show signs of romantic interest in one
Most of the video was shot on West 8th Street in Downtown Los Angeles. Adrien’s arm and Tori’s leg meet by the Bristol Hotel. The place does not have much resemblance to what it looked like 15 years ago, but hang on!
The two limbs are now hanging on a post right next to the Bristol Hotel. Again, a lot has changed over the years and this place now looks unrecognizable. However, note a few things. In this Google Street View from 2009, you can see the door of Club El Gaucho (not there anymore). The number 425 on the door is the same as in the video. Also, on the left side of the freeze frame, there is a hardly showing part of an old banner above the door. From the letters’ positioning, curves and spaces, it is almost certainly saying “Club El Gaucho”. Circled in red, you see a wall mounted fire hydrant and a little hole on the curb by the post:
Some architectural elements seen in the video after the leg falls:
Now how could we find all that? Thanks to the next scene. See the sign saying “Sparta Delicatessen Souflaki Gyros Sandwiches”? Well, it is not there anymore. But its location could be found on one of the outdated buisness directories site. So there it was, 429 West 8th Street. The tree still looks quite similar, as well as the “Right Lane Must Turn Right” sign in the red circle:
Tori’s leg hops on a skateboard and rides along the same street. From the sequence of wide/narrow walls and columns on the background in the video, it was easy to determine that this house fits:
The last location is Pershing Square, which is also pretty close to where all the previous scenes were filmed. You can see the set of stair Tori’s leg is walking on, as well as this peculiar monument in the background:
As for the long scene shot on the beach in the final part of the music video, it could really be anywhere. Not a single element could give a hint on where it is. But for the most part, we got all the cool spots where the fairytale was happening. Stay tuned!
